Buckley, who is donating “every penny” of the proceeds to the legion, made the pin for the first time last year and raised about $650,000. The company has already sold 150,000 pins this year and is expecting to donate $2.4 million, a substantial addition to the average $58 million brought in through traditional poppy sales every year.
While many have flocked to the glammed-up versions, they have also been the source of debate in the U.K., said Joseph Dublin, in charge of fundraising for the Royal British Legion. Some are saying the poppy should never be made into a fashion statement.
“There are groups that feel that the paper poppy should be retained as a standard for everyone,” Dublin said.
But the blinged-out version is helping the legion appeal to younger people, many of whom are taking more of an interest in honouring veterans and soldiers, Dublin said.
