There's a new business in Nanuet and a familiar face is behind the counter.
Local Barry Fixler is teaming up with Gary Corts to open the Hudson Valley Pawnbrokers of Rockland—320 West Route 59. Previously American General Financial Services, this new business opened this past Saturday, but its grand opening is April 1—with giveaways and prizes.
“It was obvious to go into business with (Fixler),” said Corts. “We share the same enthusiasm for helping and giving back to the community.”
“We buy and pawn just about anything,” said Stephen Rinaldo, director of operations. “We offer collateral cash loans to the publics with low interest rates and we have four other locations throughout the New York State.”
This family-owned and -operated business comes with years of experience.
“If you go to any of our stores, you’ll find a family member operating it,” said Corts. “Barry is the godfather to my brother’s children and is like a brother to me.
Jewelry boxes have been around for hundreds of years and both men and women continue to use them to store personal jewelry. Men have traditionally called a jewelry box for men a valet, even though it serves the same purpose as a woman’s jewelry storage box. Some can be interchangeably used for men or women, depending on the design, wood finish and style that appeals to each.
Today’s market has propelled the development of many different types of jewelry boxes. Some are small, others quite large. Some are made with small legs to sit on a dresser, while others are made with a box-like base and can sit on a chest, dresser or other piece of bedroom furniture. There are also boxes for jewelry that are manufactured by designer brands that are high end, quality pieces that can be used for years. Recent research shows that cadmium could very well be more dangerous to children’s health than lead . While heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, and mercury are often the first to pop up when discussing or thinking about heavy metals and human health, cadmium remains the lesser mentioned metal compromising the health of many — especially children. Current and future research will likely continue to make the dangers of cadmium more well known.
“One of the important points of the study is that we didn’t study a population of kids who had very high exposures. We studied a population representative of the U.S. That we found any [effect] suggests this is occurring at relatively low levels…It does certainly point to the fact that we need more attention paid to the neurotoxic effects of cadmium in children”
A total of 2,199 children between the ages 6 and 15 were included in the study , with 12.6 percent of them having a learning disability and 10.5 percent being enrolled in special education classes. Those with the highest cadmium levels were 3.21 times more likely to have a learning disability than children less exposed.
