Orb Factory's interactive toy causes industry buzz

With NSACD University fighting for its survival, it is interesting to check in with The Orb Factory Ltd. in Halifax, where many graduates are employed, to see what can be accomplished locally with some applied creativity.

The latest accolade garnered by the Herring Cove Road business is a nomination for 2012 speciality toy of the year award.

“It’s a big deal just to be nominated,” Stephanie Carver, an Orb Factory spokeswoman, said Thursday. “The Toy of the Year Awards are the Oscars of our industry, so we’re pretty excited about it.”

The creative crew of about 40 includes about 13 graduates of the art college, including Vanessa Wilson, the designer of the Happily Ever Jewelry Box that has won so many industry admirers.

Like other playthings in the Sticky Mosaic line from Orb Factory, the interactive toy comes with the basic jewelry box and a selection of pieces that are put in place by children, paint-by-numbers-style. It sells for about $20.
