WOODCHUCKS OF PLYMOUTH: Helping Santa with old-fashioned craftsmanship
Santa’s sleigh will be fuller as it lands at three area hospitals this weekend, thanks to a dedicated group of local craftsmen.
The Woodchucks of Plymouth, a local woodworking club, will mark its 16th year of building toys for boys and girls at area hospitals this Christmas.
The club recently delivered 65 of their handmade toys each to Jordan Hospital, Floating Hospital at New England Medical Center and Boston Medical Center.
The toys included racecars, tugboats, circus animals in train cars, crayon trucks, turtles, swans, jumping jacks, tic-tac-toe boards, whales and small jewelry boxes.
The Woodchucks make the toys throughout the year at weekly meetings.
The late Lenny Barbieri and the late Charlie Stasinos founded the club in 1995 to promote the art of woodworking and to exchange ideas and knowledge of the craft. Ben Brewster is now the club’s president.
The club has about 20 members and meets Tuesday afternoons to make toys.
