Today, the lake is smoothly white at nearly noon, glowing in the pale winter sunshine, with grey-blue shadows of clouds stretched across its further reaches. Minute diamonds glitter from within the white snow on our sloping front field, crossed with long ski tracks and the wallows marking falls and wrestling sessions (with one’s inner ski-demon). Earlier this morning the wind on the lake blew up great billows of loose snow, but the air is still now. I thought I heard a snowmobile, which was a surprise since there really isn’t enough snow yet to ride out on one.

It seems a tad ironic that the year we are spending in Maine has so far been almost snow-free. All Craig’s hard work to research the right kind of snowmobile and buy good-quality used ones is, so far, for naught. Our Ski-Doo and Yamaha sit unused outside of the cabin, waiting for a good two feet.

But it did snow on Christmas, very prettily, enough for the children to try out their new cross-country skis. So far they are doing admirably well. Just a few pointers from me (I went to college in Minnesota) and they have taken off down our hill.
