Central European banking assets could come under pressure Wednesday due to overnight news that the planned rescue of Dexia S.A. (DEXB.BT), the Belgian-French bank, is unworkable as Belgium can’t meet its agreed share of the financing.
The news indicates that France may have to increase its share in the bailout, hurting the euro in thin Asian trade, pushing the common currency below $1.35 amid speculation that France’s AAA credit rating could be under threat.
The news may add further pressure to regional banking stocks, which have seen selling pressure in recent sessions.
Closer to home, investors will have a non-euro-zone debt offer Wednesday that will test investors’ appetite for non-standard assets from relatively stable and solvent European Union countries.
The offer at hand is Poland’s auction of “road bonds”–infrastructure paper fully backed by the finance ministry.
The state-owned BGK bank will offer up to 1 billion zlotys ($303 million) in the bond, which matures in 2022, although the lower end of the offer range was set at zero, signaling the bank could reject bids if prices offered are too low.
