Review: 'Lord of Rage' by Jill Monroe

By Nalini Singh .

Brief back story on the heirs/royal siblings: The kingdom of Elden is a magical realm, one where vampires can walk in the daylight, and the royal family possesses magic. Princess Breena has powers as well, and her power is to dream walk. One night their castle is attacked by a blood sorcerer (they use human sacrifice and blood which taints their magic) and is taken over. The fight is bloody and the end is violent. Before the king and queen are killed they manage to send their children out into different realms in order to survive and avenge them, thus keeping them safe from the Blood Sorcerer. Each book tells the story of how a different heir had to survive and get back to Elden.

Breena's special dream-walking ability really only allows her to connect to one person -- this handsome (she thinks considering his face is always blurry) strong, animalistic warrior. In her dreams she is never afraid of him and they spend hours together … only the dream kicks her back into real life before they are able to really "tango." She thinks he's real, but isn't sure. On the warrior's end (his name is Osborn), he doesn't believe his dream angel is real and just focuses on protecting his brothers. They are the last three surviving members of the Ursa clan, a sort of Berserker combatant culture where each warrior has both the spirit of the bear and the man dwelling within their bodies. Turns out they both were wrong and Breena is thrust into the Ursa land (and away from the Blood Sorcerer) and manages to stumble upon Osborn's cabin. This has a distinct Goldilocks feel and the way she goes about the cottage is simply a delightful retelling!
