David Harris, director of the American Jewish Committee, a global advocacy group based in New York City, spoke in Cleveland last week about the precarious politics of the Middle East.

In a keynote address Tuesday to the Cleveland chapter of the AJC and during an interview with The Plain Dealer editorial board, Harris talked about the turmoil in the Arab world, focusing a great deal on Iran's nuclear program.

"They are seeking, so it appears, to eventually deliver a warhead," Davis told The Plain Dealer. "The question is: Can the world live with an Iranian bomb or not?"

His answer was no, emphasizing that the United States must use every available tool, including military intervention, to keep weapons of mass destruction out of Iran's hands.

Other tools, he said, include "the United States working with like-minded nations to diplomatically isolate Iran."

An Iranian bomb, he said, would represent a grave threat to Israel. "If I were Israel," he said, "I would have to take this very seriously.
