Shabbat is a day to restore body and soul to pray, learn and get your bearings.

All Jews know that Shabbat, the Jewish Sabbath or seventh day of the week, is special. For those who observe it, there is no other day that can compare to it.

Like all days in Judaism it begins after dark, in this case on Friday night, ending on Saturday night.

“The older I get, the more I need Shabbat,” says Michael of Beth Isaiah Congregation in Guelph. “A day to stop, to rest, to be refreshed ... a day to strengthen myself for the other six days of creative activity.”

From the time you light the candles to usher in Shabbat you feel the difference. Whether you welcome it as a family or include friends or relatives, it’s a special day of the week, says Howard, a fellow congregant.
