David EG and Patricia Miller commit $500000 challenge gift to Luther

Luther College President Richard Torgerson has announced David E.G. and Patricia Miller have committed a $500,000 challenge gift to the college's fund-raising campaign for its proposed aquatic center.

The Miller Challenge Gift invites alumni and friends of the college to pledge $1 million in gifts to the aquatic center fund to secure the $500,000 challenge commitment. Completion of the challenge campaign will push funding for the new facility past the $3 million mark.

The aquatic center is projected to cost $5.5 million.

The Millers, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, are long-time supporters of Luther College.  The challenge contribution is a naming gift for the competition pool for swimming and diving within the new aquatic center, which will be named the David E.G. and Patricia Miller Natatorium.

"This challenge gift from the Millers creates an exciting opportunity to accelerate the fundraising efforts for the aquatic center," said President Torgerson. "Dave and Pat are 'true blue' supporters of Luther College and Norse athletics, and we are proud to name the natatorium in their honor.

1/30/12: Keeping up with the Jones (OHS) - U.S. Masters Swimming ...

My wife and kids motivated me to get my big belly back into the pool after buying a pair of SwiMP3's for Christmas in 2008. I focused on swimming the Peaks To Portland (Maine) 2.4 mile swim in July, 2010, and have added meets and consistent training since then. I mostly swim on my own because I am only able to get together with the local Master's workout group a couple of times a month. I love the backstroke and short free events, and I have a newly discovered fondness for Open Water, having competed my first 10K in Sept, 2011. The swim felt good. I got this morning and had a pb granola bar with a half water/oj drink and headed to the pool after dropping my son off at school. I should have completed this swim by now, but kept putting it off. I can't do it tomorrow, so I needed to either get it in this am or at lunch. The pool was not to busy this morning, so after a 50 easy I started in. Only today and tomorrow to get your Postal on!...

The Gift of an Irish Spring | KandLe

Recently, I had occasion to be reminded of the importance of generosity and community.

I have no doubt that in our search for meaning and purpose through life, the more we engage, the greater will be our sense of fulfilment and purpose.

On St Stephen’s morning, it was fantastic to witness the energy and enthusiasm at our local turkey trot, organised by Mrs Margerie Holligan, supporting the Carlow-Kilkenny Homecare Team. Families gathered, not just to support a worthy cause, but to share company and friendship on a walk which raised more than €1,000.

Similar events, such as swimming in the River Barrow and charity concerts added greatly to the spirit of positive Ireland, which is so much brighter than the grey economic forecasts for the coming year.

I was greatly privileged and inspired to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary for my friends Tom and Lilly Dermody, Pairc Mhuire, Bagenalstown on 4 January. I marvelled at the wonderful gift that their generosity and love has achieved.
