Known for its iconic yellow sign and for being open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, a Waffle House with an empty parking lot is a rare sight.
And after 41 years in operation, the Waffle House at 4271 Roosevelt Blvd. has closed.
But not for good.
Though one sign in the window alerts customers that the restaurant will be closing on Oct. 26, another larger one beneath it reads: “We bought this location & want to rebuild you a NEW Waffle House,” promising “We will be back soon!”
The restaurant known as Waffle House #54 — one of the first in Jacksonville for the 56-year-old, Georgia-based chain — was first listed in the Greater Jacksonville Cross Reference Directory in 1970. Today the chain operates more than 1,600 locations across 25 states, including six in Duval County, according to state database of restaurant licenses.
No demolition or building permits have been filed with the city.
