Manager Didi Eggebrecht said her company makes competitive offers on the precious metals, but points out there are some misconceptions about the purchasing process.
“It all depends on the quality of the metal,” Eggebrecht said. “We have to base our prices on scrap and melt-down value.”
Eggebrecht said she will take a look at just about any kind of gold and sterling silver. Each piece is magnet-tested for gold content to make sure it is not heavy plating. She also looks for a hallmark which identifies the gold or karat and a stone-test which removes a tiny amount of gold from the piece, which is chemically tested for purity.
“We do everything by penny weight here in the store,” she said. “Anything that is 24 karat, we call our home office for approval, 10 karat gold right now is $12 a penny weight, 14 karat is $16 a penny weight and 18 karat is $18 a penny weight. So depending on what you have, it can add up really fast.
