Canadians top podium at ski cross event
THE BLUE MOUNTAINS — Canadians ruled the roost at the FIS World Cup ski cross championships at Blue Mountain on Friday, with Canucks winning the men's and women's divisions.
Brady Leman squeezed himself from fourth spot to second in his semifinal, then led start to finish in the final to win the men's side; fellow Canadian Chris Del Bosco moved from third to second on the second-to-last jump to claim second place behind his countryman.
On the women's side, Whistler B.C.'s Marielle Thompson won her first FIS championship race, easily outdistancing the rest of field.
It was an overwhelming experience to win her first championship in front of a Canadian crowd.
"It feels pretty awesome," said Thompson. "Coming over that last jump and hearing all their cheers was pretty amazing."
Her best FIS result until now was seventh; the 19-year-old was the Canadian champion in 2011.
After the awards were handed out, Thompson was mobbed by young fans along the fence, eager to get the skier's autograph.
